The Lighthouse hosted a theatre production ‘The Elves and the Shoemaker’ by Stuff and Nonsense, in November 2010, for early years and reception classes in Bournemouth and Poole that were invloved in the cultural hub.
Activities following the children’s attendence of the performance included artist workshops in school, and visits to local libraries. Teachers were also given a useful resource pack full of lesson ideas and stimulating projects related to the story.
We thoroughly enjoyed being part of the project and feel the children and staff gained a great deal from their involvement. We would be very keen to be involved again next year because of the impact it had on the children’s learning. Children were well supported at every stage of the process and there was real evidence of the careful thought and planning which had clearly gone in to the project to make it such a success. Our year 1 children were immediately engaged by the puppet workshop and really enjoyed having the opportunity to meet and talk to the artist. This enhanced their excitement and enjoyment of the show itself. They were keen to offer ideas and suggestions and produced their own stories in response to the show which they retold and performed to each other back in school. They also designed their own shoes with great enthusiasm! Teachers appreciated the materials and resources provided and plan to modify these for further work.
