The Hare and the Tortoise Project ran from October-December 2011 and involved 4 local primary schools; Old Town First School, Kings Park, St. Mary’s Combined and St Luke’s who are all part of the Cultural Hub.
The project involved several activities and initiatives to help primary schools engage with The Hare and the Tortoise at key stage 1. The project encouraged schools to use the story of The Hare and the Tortoise as a topic across the curriculum. It offered ideas for research, to fuel the imagination, to create characters, news stories, puppets and to think about the messages of the fable. All teachers confirmed that the project succeeded in developing talk for writing in the classroom.
“Many areas of the curriculum could be covered within the ‘Hare and Tortoise’ project. We made links with Literacy, music, art, speaking and listening skills, and DT. It was very beneficial to the children to have visitors into school to assist them in their puppetry skills and musical skills. They also really enjoyed knowing that they would be able to see the Hare and Tortoise performance and the end of the project.” Yvonne Kay, St Luke’s Primary School
