Forgotten Voices was a project between Poole Museums Service and students from Poole High School to mark Black History Month 2014 and was supported by Bournemouth and Poole Cultural Hub.
Students explored slavery and abolition in Poole using resources from the Poole History Centre. Students also worked with local historian and poet Louisa Adjoa Parker to express their own ideas through creative writing. They were able to become fully absorbed in the project throughout the two days of workshops and to connect emotionally to the subject. Their awareness and understanding was developed significantly through the project and this was demonstrated in the quality of their writing.
